Shortly after 6am on a Saturday, a quiet crowd forms on the lawns of Jardim do Torel, mats gently unrolled on dew-tipped grass. In the fresh, amber-tinted morning, they settle for meditation or warm up for slow yoga flows as the city wakes far below. Prime sunrise spots like these are becoming increasingly popular with Lisbon locals seeking calm—and a head start on the heat.
This early-morning movement is no surprise. June marked one of the hottest starts to summer since records began here, with maximum temperatures above 32°C reported on several days last week, according to IPMA (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera). With high UV levels forecast until August, health officials and wellness groups across Lisbon are urging people to exercise outdoors before the sun hits its stride.
Jardim do Torel, perched just above Avenida da Liberdade in Santo António, is one of the city's lesser-known miradouros—its steep slopes looking east across the Baixa. Here, the local group "Yoga ao Amanhecer" gathers four mornings a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday) with sessions by donation (suggested €6). Participants arriving before 7am report quiet, stillness, and excellent views of the first light reflecting off the tagus below. "It’s easily the best way to stay cool and stay grounded in summer," says weekly attendee Marta Gouveia, who lives nearby on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão.
Meanwhile, in the riverside neighbourhood of Belém, Jardim da Torre de Belém has become a go-to for both solo practitioners and organised sessions. The wide lawns beside the iconic tower open at 5:30am, and local studio Espaço Flow hosts a "Sun Salutations by the River" class every Friday morning, €10 per drop-in. According to the studio’s social media, attendance has nearly doubled since late May as temperatures and pollution levels climb through midday.
For many, sunrise yoga or meditation is as much about scheduling as serenity. Data from Câmara Municipal de Lisboa shows nearly 240 outdoor fitness permits were issued in 2025, up from 150 in 2022, and nearly half are for sunrise or early morning classes. On weekday mornings across Parque Eduardo VII, groups of up to 30 people gather for instructor-led vinyasa or seated meditation circles. This time of day typically sees air quality index (AQI) readings below 60—significantly cleaner than readings taken after 11am.
Lisbon's municipal parks are open from 6am year-round, and current safety guidelines recommend early starts to avoid both heat and UV peaks. The Associação Portuguesa de Reiki also runs free meditation gatherings at Jardim da Estrela every first Saturday at 7am, open to all interested residents and visitors.
If you’re joining a session, bring your own mat and water—public fountains at Jardim da Torre de Belém and Jardim do Torel are operational, though many regulars filter their own. Beginners will find most groups welcome, with no experience required. With the mercury set to rise again next week, most organisers are encouraging pre-registration online to manage group sizes and maintain tranquility. In a city famous for late nights, Lisbon’s serene dawns are quietly becoming the new star hour for wellness.
