Lisbon’s city council opened an additional 12 kilometres of dedicated family cycling lanes this month, connecting central green spaces directly to the riverfront and reducing car traffic on key stretches.
The routes address rising demand for safe outdoor exercise as summer temperatures climb and more residents seek low-impact fitness options close to home.
Families now start at Parque Eduardo VII, where a flat 3-kilometre loop skirts the formal gardens before linking to a protected lane on Avenida Sidónio Pais. The path continues downhill through Praça do Marquês de Pombal and reaches the Tagus river at Cais do Sodré, where the Gira public bike system maintains a station with child seats available. Further west, the Monsanto Forest Park offers a separate beginner circuit around the Alvito lake, managed in partnership with the Lisbon Sports Association, which runs free monthly orientation sessions for new cyclists.
City records show Lisbon maintains 142 kilometres of segregated cycle paths as of June 2026, with 28 kilometres designated for speeds under 15 kilometres per hour to suit children and novices. Daily Gira rentals cost €2 for the first hour and €1 for each additional 30 minutes, while family passes for four users run €15 for a full day.
Parents planning a first outing should check the Gira app for real-time bike availability at Parque Eduardo VII station 12 before 10 a.m. on weekends, carry water and a basic repair kit, and join one of the Lisbon Sports Association’s Saturday morning group rides that depart from the Monsanto lake at 9:30 a.m.
