Lisbon markets reported a 22 percent rise in sales of dried legumes and fresh eggs during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year.
Health authorities link the shift to updated Portuguese dietary guidelines released in late 2025 that recommend capping red-meat intake at 350 grams per week. Residents cite both cost and recovery goals after summer training sessions along the Tagus riverfront.
At Mercado da Ribeira on Avenida 24 de Julho, stallholders sell 500-gram bags of Portuguese chickpeas for 1.80 euros and free-range eggs from Alentejo farms at 3.20 euros a dozen. Two blocks east on Rua do Poço dos Negros, the organic grocer Celeiro stocks 1-kilogram packs of red lentils for 2.10 euros and tubs of Greek-style yogurt made in the Azores at 2.45 euros each. Both locations open at 7 a.m. on weekdays, giving early commuters time to pick up supplies before heading to offices in the Baixa district.
Nutrition workshops run by the Lisbon municipal health department at the Estrela market hall on the first Saturday of each month draw 40 to 50 participants. Sessions cover portion sizes and simple recipes using local tinned sardines, which deliver 20 grams of protein per 100-gram serving at roughly 1.50 euros a can.
Start with a base of 150 grams of cooked chickpeas or lentils added to lunch salads, then top with one boiled egg for an extra 6 grams of protein. Evening meals can swap meat for grilled sardines or a 200-gram portion of cottage cheese from Celeiro. Track intake over seven days using any standard app; most adults reach 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight without meat once these swaps become routine. Consult a local GP or registered nutritionist before making larger diet changes.
