Setúbal & Arrábida Day Trip from Lisbon: Crystal Waters and White Cliffs
The Arrábida Natural Park, about 50 kilometres south of Lisbon, hides some of Europe's most unexpectedly stunning coastline — turquoise Mediterranean-clear water against dramatic white limestone cliffs that feel more like Croatia than Portugal. The beaches of Portinho da Arrábida, Galapinhos, and Creiro are consistently ranked among Portugal's finest, with warm, calm water perfect for snorkelling and swimming. Base yourself in the fishing town of Setúbal for excellent fresh seafood restaurants before heading into the park. The Convento da Arrábida, a 16th-century monastery carved into the clifftop, offers a surreal, peaceful detour. Getting here requires a car (about 45 minutes from Lisbon via the A2 and A12), though summer minibus tours depart from Lisbon. Visit on a weekday in June or September to beat the crowds. Arrábida is the one beach day trip from Lisbon that will genuinely surprise you.
