Santos Lisbon: The Creative Neighbourhood for Bars, Design & Night Life

Santos is Lisbon's most underrated neighbourhood — a compact riverside district just west of the Alfama and east of Alcântara that has emerged as one of the city's most creative and dynamic areas without yet attracting the tourist saturation that has transformed Belem and parts of the Alfama. Design studios, concept stores, contemporary art galleries, and some of Lisbon's best cocktail bars are concentrated in a few streets of this small, walkable neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood's identity is partly shaped by the design and creative industries that have colonised its old industrial buildings: architecture studios, fashion ateliers, graphic design agencies, and a cluster of furniture and interior design showrooms along the waterfront and the streets immediately behind it. The annual Lisboa Design Weeks uses Santos as one of its main hubs. But the neighbourhood is equally known for its nightlife — several of Lisbon's best bars, including the celebrated Cinco Lounge, are clustered in Santos and attract a mix of creative professionals and in-the-know visitors who prefer a more local atmosphere than the tourist bars of Bairro Alto.

Santos is also the gateway to the waterfront promenade linking Lisbon's riverside neighbourhoods: walking west from Santos along the Tagus takes you past the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (National Museum of Ancient Art — Portugal's greatest painting collection, largely overlooked by visitors) and the 16th-century Ermida de Santo Amaro chapel to the regenerated Alcântara waterfront. The neighbourhood is served by tram 25 from Praça do Comércio and is a 15-minute walk from Cais do Sodré station.
