Óbidos Day Trip from Lisbon: Portugal's Perfectly Preserved Medieval Town
Just 80 kilometres north of Lisbon, the medieval walled town of Óbidos is one of Portugal's most enchanting day trips. The entire village sits inside ancient 12th-century walls, with whitewashed houses draped in bougainvillea and cobblestone lanes that have changed little in centuries. Start at the Porta da Vila gateway, walk the full circuit of the ramparts for panoramic views over the vineyards and lagoon, then explore Rua Direita lined with craft shops and local cafés. Don't leave without trying ginjinha — the tart cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup that Óbidos is famous for. The village also hosts celebrated festivals including a medieval fair in July and a chocolate festival in March. Trains and buses run regularly from Lisbon, or hire a car to also stop at Caldas da Rainha's quirky ceramics market. Budget a full day to soak in the magic of this perfectly frozen-in-time Portuguese gem.
