Surfing Near Lisbon: Peniche, Costa de Caparica & Ericeira
Lisbon sits at the edge of the Atlantic — within 90 minutes of some of Europe's finest surf breaks. Ericeira is a World Surf Reserve. Peniche hosts the WSL Championship Tour (Supertubos). Costa de Caparica is 30 minutes from the city centre. For surfers, Lisbon is one of Europe's best-positioned cities.
Costa de Caparica (30 mins from Lisbon)
30km of Atlantic beach south of the Tagus — 29 numbered beach sections, each with its own vibe. Sections 1-9 are busier and more accessible; sections 17+ are quieter and more consistent for surf. Surf schools cluster around sections 1-3. Bus 161 from Praça de Espanha or ferry from Belém + bus.
Ericeira (45 mins north)
One of only three WSR (World Surf Reserve) destinations globally. Seven quality breaks within 4km: Ribeira d'Ilhas (the famous point break), Pedra Branca, São Sebastião. Great intermediate town with strong surf community.
Peniche (90 mins north)
Home to Supertubos — Portugal's most powerful beach break and one of Europe's best barrelling waves. Advanced surfers only at the main break. The peninsula has more forgiving spots for intermediate surfers. WSL CT event in October draws world's best.
