Cascais Day Trip from Lisbon: Beach Town & Estoril Coast
Cascais is Lisbon's most charming day trip — a royal fishing village turned upscale beach town, just 40 minutes west on a train that hugs the Tagus estuary then the Atlantic coast. Prettier than Sintra for a beach day, easier than Comporta, and beloved by both Portuguese families and wealthy expats.
Getting There
Train from Cais do Sodré (Lisbon) — the Cascais line runs every 20 minutes, 40 minutes to Cascais, €2.45 each way. Sit on the right side leaving Lisbon for Estoril coast views. The train passes through Belém, Estoril and Parede before arriving.
Cascais Town
The historic centre is compact and walkable. The Peixaria da Cidadela (Citadel Fish Market) is the place to eat fresh seafood. The Museu do Mar and Casa das Histórias Paula Rego (contemporary art) are worth a visit. The Cascais Market runs Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Best Beaches Near Cascais
- Praia de Cascais — right in town, calmer waters, busy in summer
- Praia do Guincho — wild Atlantic beach 8km west, dunes and wind, popular with surfers and kitesurfers
- Praia de Santa Marta — small cove near the lighthouse, less crowded
