Lisbon sleep clinics recorded a 22 percent rise in overnight study bookings between January and June this year compared with the same period in 2025.
Residents report shorter nightly rest amid longer commutes along the A5 motorway and extended screen time in offices around Parque das Nações. The Portuguese Society of Sleep Medicine noted in its March 2026 report that adults in the Lisbon district average 6.4 hours of sleep on weekdays, below the seven-hour threshold linked to higher cardiovascular risk.
The Sleep Medicine Centre at Hospital de Santa Maria on Avenida Professor Egas Moniz operates four beds for polysomnography and offers weekday appointments starting at 8 pm. Three blocks away on Rua Tomás da Fonseca, the private Lisbon Sleep Institute runs home-based kits that upload data to its servers by morning. Both locations accept referrals from general practitioners in the Bairro Alto health centre network.
Standard overnight studies at Hospital de Santa Maria cost €480 when scheduled before the end of July 2026. The institute charges €320 for portable monitoring that includes oxygen saturation and leg movement sensors. Patients receive a printed summary within 72 hours and a follow-up consultation on site.
Callers can reserve slots directly through the hospital’s central line or the institute’s online portal, which lists availability through September. Those without a referral should first visit their local clinic on Rua do Poço dos Negros for an initial assessment form. Results feed into tailored advice on light exposure timing and bedroom temperature settings measured at 18 degrees Celsius.
